Santa Maria Novella is probably the most important example of Gothic church in
Tuscany and it is one of the main attractions
in Florence. The first church, called Santa Maria
delle Vigne, was built in 1094 on the site of
an existing chapel, than the Dominicans, that were in charge of
the church, a several
years later, completed the construction, creating the present church. The facade was completed in 1470 by Leon Battista
Alberti. Inside, there are some precious art masterpieces,
including Masaccio's Trinity, a Giotto crucifix
in the sacristy and in the main chapel (Cappella
Maggiore) there are also frescoes created by Ghirlandaio.
The church is located near the Santa Maria Novella railway station |
